Recently I’ve had the honor and pleasure of working on the big page of The New Yorker, with a piece about Narcissism.
I thought for once I’d like to talk a little about the path to the presentation of the sketches: one of the few things my experience taught me is that a magazine as The New Yorker usually prefers artworks a little less conceptual than the trends nowadays, which sticks a little more to the headline of the article. This was also a particular occasion, since they didn’t have yet the full article at the time they commissioned me the piece, few weeks ago.
So my only hint was the author would have written a piece about Narcissism, a review of two forthcoming books on this historic subject.
Also, a suggestion came form the AD. They thought to a stylish, overdressed woman -either a contemporary woman or an elegant lady from the past century- deeply engrossed in her own mirrored picture.
So that was my starting point. I went for the contemporary one, in a stance which reminds me the old myth of Narcissus. Some adjustments here and there and it was a very messy situation.
A Mess. That was the flash which suggested me a completely upside down situation. In my second attempt i decided to undress the woman. I saw her in a room full of clothes, a giant pyramid of messy dresses, gloves, boots and accessories with no order. The woman is so lost in her own image, in the idea of her perfect body that has completely forgotten to cover it. The pyramid raises her closer to the chandelier so that her face is now better enlightened.
Third proposal: could i avoid the hot topic of these days? To me the Selfie is maybe the worst derivation of the narcissism. I just imagine a beautiful scene: the Central Park. It’s spring (actually it’s spring indeed) everything is blooming, the scene with a perfect blue sky background is literally breathtaking. So that why not taking a picture of that? Because, of course, it’s better if we flip the camera and take a selfie instead, probably with a super grey and dusty ground behind our shoulders.
My AD was very happy of the ideas i came up with and despite she liked all of them, she was very sure about which i should have brought to the final stage.
Curious of which one is it? Well then stay tuned and just be a bit patient, i’ll unveil it as soon as it’s published.
